Managing Chronic Pain Holistically

The Solution

There isn't one.  If there was, our lives wouldn't be as impacted as they are.  What we can do is to learn to cope.  We can learn to quiet our Nervous Systems, adapt to functional exercises and increase our understanding of why we feel pain.  Positive self-talk, Mindfulness and Nutrition play enormous roles in Living Well with Chronic Pain.

The Problem

Chronic Pain affects a large proportion of the general population – approximately one in five adults which is a staggering statistic.  Its impact on individuals is considerable: sleep, work and relationships are compromised, depression and anxiety are common, and some express the wish to die.  The lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts ranges from 5% to 14% in people with chronic pain.  We lose friends, become prisoners in our own homes, and suffer silently.  We sell our souls to the Pain Clinics that offer our relief, and live on egg shells for that moment when they decide you've had enough.  But while these medications may work for some people, in others, the side effects—ranging from nausea to heart complications—may outweigh the relief.  This is the problem with Chronic Pain - it's not just about pain.

The Good News

Holistic pain management is designed to work with your body’s internal functions, triggering natural healing and releasing endorphins, your body’s “feel good” chemicals.  Science understands a body in chronic pain continually sends stress signals to the brain, leading to a heightened perception of not only the pain itself but also the perceived level of threat. It’s a vicious cycle that’s hard to break or control.  But not impossible.  โ€‹
